Italian Meatball Sliders

Italian Meatball Sliders ~ Juicy delicious Meatball sliders with melted Mozzarella topping #Sliders #Meatballs #Sandwiches

Our family loves meatballs, served any way - over pasta, rice on it's own with a dip and especially on a roll as with these lip smacking Italian Meatball Sliders .

I like this recipe as the sauce is mixed into the meatballs first, baked and then simmered in more of the sauce for a couple of minutes.

Baking the meatballs also means less fat which is great as I try to use as many fat-reduced / low-fat and wholewheat ingredients in as many recipes as possible.

I used a low-in-salt and low-fat Pasta Sauce but it is not always available from our local supermarkets. The alternative {or if you prefer} is of course to use homemade .. real homemade from scratch.

Mine also only had a few dots of Mozzarella, but Roy and Dimitri's were covered in cheese which melted not only over the meatballs but right into the filling as well ;-)  You decide how much Mozzarella you prefer !

6 Sliders

750g Lean Ground Beef
3 TB Fresh Wholewheat Breadcrumbs
1 t Dried Italian Herbs
2 cups Tomato and Basil Pasta Sauce, divided
3/4 t Salt
1 TB Olive Oil
1 Green Bell Pepper, chopped
1 Onion, thinly sliced
6 Long Hotdog Style Wholewheat Rolls
1/2 cup Low-Fat Mozzarella Cheese, grated or sliced

1.) Pre-heat the oven to 200 deg C (400 deg F) - spray a large oven dish with cooking oil.
2.) Combine the Beef, Breadcrumbs, Italian Herbs, 1/4 cup Pasta Sauce and the Salt in a mixing bowl - shape into 2.5 cm  {1 inch} meatballs - place on the prepared oven dish and bake 25 - 30 minutes or until done, turning over after 15 minutes.
3.) Heat the Olive Oil - saute the Green Pepper and Onion until soft - add the baked meatballs together with the remaining Pasta Sauce - simmer 5 minutes.
4.) Scoop 3 meatballs into each Roll - spoon a little sauce over and top with Mozzarella Cheese.
5.) Place under the grill element of the oven until the Cheese has melted.
