Ingredients Breakdown

In this section, I will be detailing the key ingredients used in the delicious Honey Chicken and Cabbage Noodle Bowl, a dish perfect for a fulfilling lunch or light dinner.

Each component plays an essential role in creating the unique flavor and texture of this dish.

Protein Sources

  • Chicken Fillets (Tenders): A lean and tender choice, chicken fillets are the main protein in this dish. They cook quickly and absorb the flavors well.

Vegetables and Herbs

  • Cabbage: Both green and red cabbage add crunch and sweetness, with shredded varieties making for easier prep. One or both (green or red cabbage) can be used, however I prefer green.
  • Fresh Ginger: A warm, zesty kick that complements the honey and soy sauce perfectly.

Flavor Enhancers

  • Honey: Its natural sweetness balances the savory elements.
  • Soy Sauce: Adds umami and a deep, rich flavor profile.
  • Sesame Oil: Imparts a nutty aroma and enriches the overall taste.
  • Black Pepper: Enhances the dish with a spicy note.

Cooking Oils and Fats

  • Vegetable Oil: I use it for its neutral taste and high smoke point, ideal for cooking chicken and vegetables.
  • Sesame Oil: Again, a touch of sesame oil can be drizzled at the end for an extra layer of flavor.

A combination of these ingredients, each fulfilling a distinct purpose, comes together to create a very satisfying meal which even my grandkids love.

Cooking Method

In crafting a Honey Chicken and Cabbage Noodle Bowl, I focus on a technique that brings out a rich flavor profile while ensuring the chicken is well-cooked and savory. Precision in heat management and timing is key in achieving the perfect dish.

Preparing the Chicken

I like to begin by cutting the chicken into strips. Seasoning is crucial for depth of flavor, so I coat the chicken evenly with a mixture of salt, black pepper, and a light dusting of cornflour (cornstarch). This not only adds taste but ensures a crispy texture when fried.

Creating the Flavor Base

The foundation of taste in this dish comes from the flavor base. Heat the Vegetable Oil in a skillet or wok and cook the Chicken until golden and done – remove from wok and keep warm.  Using the same wok, heat the Ginger, Honey and Soy Sauce – reduce until sticky – pour over Chicken kept aside.  I then add the sesame oil into the same wok and gently stir-fry the cabbage until soft.

Combining Ingredients

Finally, I add the cooked noodles to the cabbage, toss together and heat through. Spoon the cabbage and noodles onto plates and top with the honey sauce coated Chicken. This delicious blend of ingredients produces a meal ideal for lunch or a light dinner, served best when hot and fresh.
