Baked Hoisin Chicken Buns

I picked up a bag of freshly made bread dough at the supermarket the other day, not really sure what I wanted to do with it. But before we even reached home, I knew I wanted to bake a bun with some kind of meat stuffing inside ~ say hello to the Baked Hoisin Chicken Buns !

The smell of freshly baked bread is just amazing, but I am not patient enough to make my own bread dough, a proper dough with yeast and all that. Fortunately, sometimes we go to the stores early in the morning and if we are lucky a bag {or two} of their bread dough would still be on the refrigerator shelf.

Hoisin Sauce and Chicken are just great together and even though I listed three tablespoonfuls in the Ingredient list, I would usually add up to 5 tablespoons, all depending on how I feel the day I make these. I would suggest the oldest trick, taste and add until you are satisfied !  {yeah, not really a trick, but the most trustworthy method!}


Serves : 6 - 8


500g Cooked Chicken, shredded
1/3 cup Spring Onions, chopped finely  ~ white and green parts
3 TB Hoisin Sauce
2 TB Oyster Sauce
1 TB Rice Vinegar
Raw Bread Dough ~ enough for 1 loaf of bread  {I use store bought}
1 Egg, beaten
1 t Sesame Seeds


1.) Pre-heat the oven to 190 deg C (375 deg F) - line a baking sheet with baking paper.
2.) Mix together the Chicken, Onions, Hoisin- and Oyster Sauce and the Rice Vinegar in a mixing bowl.
3.) Break the Dough into 8 even sized pieces - roll out each piece in a 10cm (4 inch) round - place 2 - 3 tablespoonfuls of the Chicken filling in the center of each round of dough - gather all the edges and pinch to seal - place seam side facing down on the baking sheet.
4.) Cover with clingfilm and leave 20 minutes to rise.
5.) Brush with the beaten Egg and sprinkle over the Sesame Seeds - bake 15 - 20 minutes or until done and golden.
