German Chocolate Cake Bars

German Chocolate Cake Bars

If you are looking for an easy dessert to serve warm or cold, these German Chocolate Cake Bars are just the dessert for you.

The Chocolate Cake layer is made from a Cake mix, of which I had half a box left and had no idea how to use it, until I thought about a layering kind of dessert, which proved to be a winner.

You should get between 9 and 12 servings from this recipe, depending on your cut. It is quite a rich sweet treat, therefore I would recommend rather slicing smaller squares than larger. Seconds might very well be requested, rich or not, as these Cake Bars are extremely delicious and so addicting.

I love how easy it is to slice and serve them. Some of us add some whipped cream, but that is totally optional - ice-cream on a warm piece is heavenly though !

We had a few slices leftover the next day which we enjoyed at tea time and after that we had no more leftovers ... not surprising though, you would have one piece, think that would keep your sweet tooth in check, only to find yourself with another piece a few minutes later - I refer to "you" but really mean "ME".

My son is not a fan of desserts, or any dishes for that matter, containing nuts, but he loved these German Chocolate Cake Bars. I did chop the nuts fairly small though, you can chop it any way you like, rough, medium or fine-ish.

INGREDIENTS:

Chocolate Cake Mix, 1/2 Box {I use Pillsbury}
4 Eggs, divided
1/2 cup Pecan Nuts, chopped
1/2 cup Butter, melted
4 cups Icing Sugar
250g Cream Cheese, softened

Icing Sugar, for dusting

DIRECTIONS:

1.) Pre-heat the oven to 180 deg C (350 deg F) - line a  20 x 20cm oven dish with baking paper - let the paper hang over the edges for easy removal later.
2.) Combine the Cake Mix, 1 Egg, Nuts and Butter well - press onto the bottom of the prepared oven dish.
3.) Beat together the Icing Sugar and Cream Cheese - add the Eggs one-by-one, beating continuously until smooth - pour over the Chocolate Cake batter.
4.) Bake 1 hour or until the center is set {place a piece of aluminum foil loosely over the dessert if it browns too quickly}
5.) Remove from the oven - let cool and lift out by holding the paper and pulling up.

Dust with Icing Sugar, slice and serve.

  1. Yum, that not only looks delicious but it is so pretty. I love german chocolate. I have a recipe for frosting that uses german chocolate and if there is any left in the bowl, I have to run to the sink and fill it with water before I eat it all with a spoon!

  2. That looks so good! I wish I had a piece right now! My husband doesn't like nuts in his food either, so the smaller the chop the better.
