Hutch Makeover

Hutch Makeover ~ DIY A Drab laminated hutch to a new Fab painted hutch ( and 1 or 2 other changes complete this piece } #FurniturePainting #LaminatePainting

We bought a wall unit set comprising of 3 units, somewhere in the 90's. This was mainly used as a set for most of the time but over the years we bought {several!} different TV stands and the the 3 units were scattered all over the house, being used for all kinds of things.

I finally decided to get rid of 2 units - the actual TV unit and a liquor flip-down type unit. As I am a huge fan of anything glass, I kept this one because of the glass doors and I have always kept my drinking glasses in this one.  Also, it has a back light, which looks quite awesome when switched on {but, we hardly ever bother with this}

So, back to today's post - the laminated wood started to look awful and very 90's, besides, it does not fit in with the other furniture {newly painted/acquired} in the lounge.

I have a rectangular lounge with large windows on one long side and more windows on the one short side. As we have an open plan lounge/dining room, the other short side of the lounge of course opens up into the dining room. Now, this hutch seems to be in a strange place,,, right in front of a door !  BUT, that door is hardly ever being used. I think in the almost 20 years we have lived in this house, we had that door open less than a dozen times. Why? Well, the previous owners started to build a porch or extra room next to the lounge and this door leads there {they got as far as an open type of porch - more a foundation only}

The kids and I always wanted to finish this area as it would lead to the swimming pool and the back garden, but Roy just never was interested.

Right, so we do not need the door and I needed some space to place this hutch.

Not really a lot to tell, we sanded the laminated wood lightly, applied a base coat and then used a high pressure spray gun to spray paint the hutch in a color I had mixed specially at our local Builders Express.

We removed the old brassy handles and replaced them with aluminium curve handles.

A close up of some of my favorite photos. My #1 fave is the photo at the back, right, of the kids on a swing. There is one of me {much, much younger me!} , Roy, a pic of Roy and the kids which were taken the last night we'd seen my Mom alive, a pic taken in a restaurant on Christmas Day 2008, my friend, Alice and her son, Jonathan {also my godson - but he is a grown man by now!}, some more of the kids and riiiiggghtt at the back {center} one of the four of us - this one I keep as a reminder to how close I came to death as a result of being overweight and high blood cholesterol.  Btw, I shook off over 50 pounds in less than 4 months after the doctor gave me the eye opener !  Still maintaining the weightloss ;-)

Before and after ...

 Okay, last pic - you must be wondering why I took photos in which the glass is reflecting some kind of bars? Well, our main front door is right across from this {yes, I know there is some Asian saying that 2 outgoing doors opposite one another is bad karma or something ...}
Anyhow, it is the security gate which I never, never unlock when I am alone at home. And if I close the main door, it is too dark and my little point-and-shoot {even with Mr PicMonkey's help} can not achieve miracles.

There we have another piece of the lounge done, and this weekend I will do the final touches and can hopefully share the complete lounge with you in the next week or so.

Thanks for reading !
