I checked some of my blog posts the other day and realized I don’t really make anything for Cheri! Everything the last couple of months was for Dimitri or his room .. mmm, not good
But then again, Cheri is always missing in action ! Okay, I know I am trying to justify myself … not working, so I set forth to make something just for her.
I found an old denim which she has thrown out months ago already, but which I kept.
Cheri has beach bags, office bags,,, but not really anything she uses outside office hours and like me she likes to cart around a bunch of {totally necessary ! } stuff.
Here comes the upcycled sling bag. I told her I am making her a bag and all she really wanted was something with a long strap, so that she can wear it across her body.
Sorry, I have no tutorial to show, as this was a first for me and there were so many nips, tucks and cuts .. I couldn’t keep count anymore ! I just went along and changed as the bag took shape.
It started out with the above denim pants – see there are lots of nice detail – on the back pockets, the embroidered flowers on the one side and some studs/bling on the other side.
A closer look at the loop I made – this fits over the existing button of the pants – I added a strip of rough burlap {which in SA, by the way, is called Hessian}to look like a belt with a simple knot in front. Here and there, I have stitched the opening to a smaller size to 1.) not loose space inside the bag and also not to have a large opening and 2.) to still give the two rounded, almost butt like appearance !
A piece of the embroidered flower is on one side of the bag.
And studs/bling on the other side.
Both the back pockets were still 100%, so I left them as additional pockets to the bag.
{forgot to take a pic of the back 🙁 }
There we have it – the two pockets on the back and two more on the front {the little change pocket} is also still inside the one front pocket – lots of storage for a young girl toting around all the necessities !

Very cute bag, she'll love it. It's called hessian here too. When I started reading blogs I looked everywhere for this amazing burlap stuff people were drooling over, then discovered it was just hessian LOL

Hi Linda, this bag looks beautiful! I´ve had something like this in mind for a while, but never decided to start (although I have at least four or five old denim pants stored, including a flower patterned one…) Now you´ve inspired me to put down to work!!! Thanks for sharing, visited you from The Bouquet of Talent.
Hugs,
K.

This is so creative of you Linda!
I'm quite jealous as I didn't inherit my Mom's talent to sew (she was and expert)
But I might just show this post to one of my friends – maybe she will make me a bag like this. It is definitely my kind of bag 🙂

Very cute. I've been a little denim crazy lately, so had to click on at Simply Sweet Home. 🙂 I'm actually making another denim bag right now. I'm trying to finish tonight so I can bring it to a wedding shower tomorrow! Better get to work! Love for you to visit me at Gina's Craft Corner sometime and check out some of my denim projects.

Very cool. Did you line the bag? That is the stage which always puts me off – attaching the lining is such hard work!

found you over @ Tatertots and Jello – I used to make these back in the late 70's early 80's – thanks for posting this – it brought back great memories of my childhood!!

I love making bags out of jeans, skirts, anything really. I love how you added the burlap belt and all of the little special accents! I'm planning on making one for my 9 year old this week so this was great inspiration!

My sweet "young" mom died in June. She was 85 but was not a polyester wearing lady. She was jeans and tees all the way. I have tons of her jeans and cannot part with them. I am a non-sewer, but I have a sewing maching and a desire to create purses for family. Where does this newbie begin? My mom would be laughing.
