Cinnamon Dumplings

With A Blast: Cinnamon Dumplings    #dessert #cinnamon #dumplingrecipe
Dumplings always make me think about my Granny. She was an excellent cook and baker. Baked her own bread a few times per week.  When she was living alone, she only baked on occasion but I remember my uncle, especially, was a huge fan of her homemade bread {and leftover dough were used to make the traditional South-African #vetkoek }
Anyhow, dumplings was another speciality of Granny, sometimes it was cooked/baked on top of a savory dish and other times we would have the sweet version as dessert.
We still eat dumplings, regularly, but I can not seem to even get close to her recipe.  I do however, have a huge Tupperware container with old recipes which I think mostly belonged to my late Mom, but some must have come from my granny as well {really need to find time to go through that container ! }
But, here is my latest tried out version of dumplings as a dessert:

CINNAMON DUMPLINGS

source: Best of Sarie Food {magazine}
9 – 12 dumplings
DOUGH:
215ml {= 1 cup minus 2 TB} Flour
2 t Baking Powder
Pinch Salt
1 TB Butter
1 Egg
1/2 cup Milk
TO SPRINKLE:
1/2 t Ground Cinnamon
1 TB Sugar
1 TB Butter
SYRUP:
1 t Butter
2 TB Sugar
1/2 t Ground Cinnamon
1.) Mix together the Flour, Baking Powder and Salt – rub in the Butter until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
2.) Beat together the Egg and Milk – add to the Flour mixture – mix until a stiff dough forms – allow to rest for 15 minutes.
3.) Boil 2 cups of Water with a Pinch of Salt – turn the heat to low – spoon tablespoonfuls of dough into the water {not too many at a time} – cover and cook for 8 – 10 minutes.
4.) Mix the Ground Cinnamon & Sugar {to sprinkle} – remove the dumplings when cooked and place on a serving dish – immediately sprinkle with the Cinnamon Sugar and dot with the Butter.
5.) Once all the Dumplings have been cooked – add the Butter, Sugar and Ground Cinnamon {for the syrup} to the leftover water – stir and boil one minute – pour over the Dumplings.
Serve immediately as is, with ice-cream or cream.
Hope you enjoy this oldie but still a goldie !
