Valentine’s Smash Cake

Valentine’s Smash Cake is made of Chocolate Hearts which is then filled with candy of your choice. Very easy and fun !

Valentine's Smash Cake

I Think Smash Cakes are just too cute!  It is like a lucky packet, you never know what might be inside.

This Valentine Smash Cake was so easy to make, as I mentioned in a previous post, you only need a tiny bit of patience when working with chocolate.

I made two of these, as I have 2 heart shaped silicone molds – they are about 18cm (just under 8 inches) from side to side and roughly the same from top to bottom.

The molds are not very high, though, maybe 2 1/2 cm (1 inch) but was big enough to hold a lot of candy.

(printable “How To” card at the bottom)

This is what you need to make a smash cake:

  • Chocolate, melted
  • Candy for the inside (I used Chocolate Eclairs)
  • Decorations (I used Wafer leaves and Medium Hard Icing Roses and small Icing Flowers on the sides)
  • Heart shaped mold, silicone works best
  • Silver Bakery tray – slightly bigger than your mold

How to make a smash cake:

Valentine's Smash Cake

1.) Pour a small amount of melted chocolate into the molds

-Use the back of a spoon (preferably plastic) to spread the chocolate all over the bottom and sides of the mold

– It does not have to be completely covered or perfect the first time

– Place in the freezer compartment for 1 – 2 minutes – remove and repeat the chocolate coating and chilling another 3 times

– It should now be thick enough – leave in the freezer a little longer the last time round (about 3 minutes)

2.) Loosen the edges of the mold and tap lightly in order for the chocolate to slide out

– In the photo on the left is the “bowl” with the inside (see not perfect, does not matter, no-one will notice) the heart on the right is perfectly smooth on the outside

3.) Fill the “bowls” with candy of your choice

4.) Dribble a little melted chocolate on the edges as per the Arrow

– Now, place your Bakery Tray (silver side down) – marked with an X – on top of the chocolate heart

– Wait a minute or two and then flip it over, use your hand underneath to steady the chocolate heart as it will now be quite heavy, filled with the candy

5.) Decorate as you wish and your Valentine’s Cake is ready to be smashed !

*** Try not to touch the outside of the Chocolate too much with your hands (even if you wear gloves) – it leaves marks/prints as the Chocolate is very smooth
